Educated in Wisconsin, California and Texas, Mary's first focus was on detailed black and white drawings. Any subject fascinated her, including intricate abstracts. In 1995, watercolor painting attracted Mary as a natural evolution from pen and ink, and pencil drawing. Watercolor introduced a vibrancy and fluidity which stimulated a new avenue for personal expression. In 1996 Mary established MKGriffin Art and began exhibiting at art venues and painting numerous murals for area businesses and residences. In 2005 Mary and a friend began a new venture with "Bringing Walls to Life," painting custom acrylic name canvases for children's rooms. As a board member for Plano Art Association she has served as Special Exhibits chairperson, seeking out venues for members to display their art and as Workshop chairperson, organizing and planning seminars for visiting artists. As a way of sharing her knowledge with aspiring artists, Mary has taught watercolor classes in Plano for five years and held watercolor workshops in Plano and California. Mary has enjoyed donating many pieces to worthy organizations in the past several years such as the DMA, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Art Centre of Plano. In collaboration with two other artists, she donated her time to paint a mural for City House, a non-profit organization for children in crisis. Mary is currently most intrigued by incorporating pen and ink into her watercolor painting, linking past and present media in a new way.
